Additional information: Attendance at each class session will be vital to student success in the course. To complete the observations and lessons, students must allow a three hour block of time during the local middle school operational hours from 7:45 am to 3:15 pm. A background check is required.
Second course in the Terrapin Teachers teacher preparation sequence. Students gain field experience and continue exploring teaching as a career by conducting teacher observations, and planning and implementing lessons in local, high-need middle school classrooms. Students work closely with UM master teachers to build upon the inquiry-based teaching practices developed in TLPL 101. Students work with mathematics and science curricula while attending to state and district standards, in order to develop and enact lessons that are responsive to students' reasoning in math and science.

Learning, Agency, and Inquiry in the Age of AI examines how AI changes what it means to learn, think, and create knowledge. Students will compare human learning and machine learning to develop accurate mental models of modern AI systems--and to recognize where common "AI-as-a-person" metaphors mislead. The course focuses on human-AI interaction as a learning relationship: how beliefs about AI shape trust and reliance, how inquiry and research practices shift when AI becomes a cognitive partner, and what reasoning and metacognitive skills become more valuable (and more fragile) in AI-mediated learning. Students leave with an evidence-based "AI learning playbook," a transparent workflow for inquiry-with-AI (verification, sourcing, and accountability), and a framework for exercising agency and ethical judgment in academic, civic, and professional contexts.

This lab will be a combination of collaborative group work and a fieldwork component in a local partner school, which requires fingerprinting and a background check (facilitated by Terrapin Teachers).
Students can expect a highly collaborative, discussion-based exploration of STEM teaching and learning, classroom complexity, and social justice. Fieldwork includes four visits to a local middle school classroom to observe, facilitate discussions, and lead STEM lessons. This course is designed for students pursuing or seriously considering the middle or secondary STEM certification pathways.
